Description
Please describe the primary personal and/or professional experience that was most responsible for your decision to pursue a career as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). How have you prepared yourself personally and professionally for graduate study as a nurse anesthetist resident at our school? Five years out from graduation, where do you see yourself and how will others see you?Personal Statement
The University of Miami has always been my first choice for graduate school as I feel I
would make an exceptional candidate for your Master’s in Nurse Anesthesia Program,
considering my educational and professional background. Having been born and raised in Miami
by Cuban parents, I am a highly motivated, resilient, and determined individual whose life has
been more of a struggle, with nursing coming through as my sole salvation. Nursing has helped
me grow the art of patient care, providing my patients immense love, joy, and dignity.
Working as a critical care nurse within the intensive care unit, I have learned about the
limited autonomy I am given in the field. I experienced this firsthand when my patient began
decompensating rapidly and unexpectedly became unresponsive. After assessing this young
patient, I began bagging her, reached out for help from my fellow nurses, and called the
intensivist. She did not have adequate chest rise and needed urgent intubation. However, the
intensivist on shift was intubating another patient and advised me to reach out to anesthesia for
help. During those crucial minutes of helplessness, I realized my skills were maxed out, and my
hands were tied. This was a significant moment for me that inspired me to become a Certified
Registered Nurse Anesthetist. I want to aid in future situations where I can jump into action
without preventable limitations.
Becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) would align perfectly with
my personal, educational, and professional goals. My personal goal is to have an optimal worklife balance. I need to prioritize the demands of my career and personal life. As a future CRNA, I
can work different shifts that will allow me the flexibility to dedicate time to my family, as
having a close relationship with my loved ones is essential in my personal life. Regarding my
education, I am eager to expand my knowledge and skills to provide optimal patient care. Going
to CRNA school would provide me with the tools to succeed and reach the goals of optimizing
patient care. For instance, I would be able to provide anesthesia-related care not only for surgical
procedures but also for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. As a professional in the field of
nursing, it is fundamental for me to stay up to date with evidence-based practice, medications,
and interventions. Becoming a CRNA will provide me with new knowledge that surpasses my
current skill set and allow me to pass on that knowledge to others. This education and
collaboration with other colleagues will promote an environment of growth in this constantly
changing field. Furthermore, I want to offer my aid to low-income communities to help their
local hospitals that do not have access to the same resources.
The University of Miami is my top choice for graduate school because of its rigorous
integrated program and the high first-time passing score of 93%. Getting my CRNA certification
from the University of Miami would offer me the best possible clinical experience and the
opportunity to engage in highly challenging cases without competing with anesthesiology
residents. Your school further bolsters my confidence that pursuing a career as a CRNA would
be the best decision as I prepare to become a highly trained healthcare provider. I am an
excellent fit for your BSN-to-DNP Nurse Anesthesia program because I resonate strongly with
the University of Miami’s mission to transform lives through education, research, innovation, and
service. Lastly, I appreciate that the University of Miami emphasizes diversity and inclusion,
taking seriously its commitment to blending different student cultures into a harmonious family
atmosphere. This motivates me and increases my confidence in your school, knowing that you
understand the significance of diversifying the nursing profession and embracing culturally
sensitive care. I propose to become a lifelong learner and transformational CRNA with an
exceptional commitment to serving all populations, especially the vulnerable and underdeserved. The luxury of studying at the University of Miami will enable me to excel in the
CRNA program to reach my personal, educational, and professional goals.
